Who should have a skin check appointment?Everyone! However you should have regular skin checks, particularly if: - you are over 40 - you have had a skin cancer before - you have fair skin - you are immunosuppressed
-
Do I need a referral from my GP for an appointment? No there is no need for a referral. We believe that skin checks should be accessible for everyone.
-
What does a skin check appointment involve?First, we have a chat about your skin health and determine your overall skin cancer risk and any concerns you might have. Then we need to look at all your skin (even the parts that aren't exposed to the sun). You will need to be undressed down to your underwear for this. Using a dermatoscope (a special hand-held visual device that allows the user to see into the skin), we use a light to look over all your skin and take close up looks at EVERY lesion on your skin to determine regular from irregular and take images of any lesions that require monitoring or look irregular. Once you are dressed, we discuss what has been found (or not found!) and any recommendations/follow up that is required. You are welcome to ask any questions at this stage. We also email you everything that has been done and a plan for your future skin health including any follow up appointments that might be necessary. Read more below about how to prepare for your skin check.
-
What is the difference between a skin check appointment and a spot check?A full body skin check is a head-to-toe assessment of ALL of your skin. With a spot check, we only look at 1-5 lesions that YOU are concerned about. You do not need to get undressed for this type of appointment unless necessary (due to location).
-
What is the difference between a skin cancer screening with you and other providers? With SKiNTUITION, you are seeing a qualified registered nurse with a special interest in skin cancer and postgraduate qualifications in dermosocpy and skin cancer management. Our skin checks are about educating YOU the patient as well as checking all of your skin. We take our time to get to know you and your concerns, to perform a thorough examination with an explanation of everything we find and how you can look after your own skin now and into the future. Our aim is to make you feel comfortable in a non-judgemental space and to empower you to understand how to look after your skin.
-
Will my insurance cover a skin check/spot check appointment? We are not affiliated with any insurance company. Generally speaking, health insurers do not cover screening examinations such as skin cancer checks however it is always best to discuss this directly with your insurance provider.
-
Do I need a support person with me for my appointment? That is totally up to you and we don't mind if you bring a support person with you, however you will be required to undress down to your underwear.
-
Why do you need to take images during my appointment? We use DermEngine, an intelligent dermatology software for the imaging, documentation and analysis of skin lesions. This software allows us to securely store your images for future reference and monitoring. We can monitor changes in your skin and lesions so that things are caught early. You will be able to create your own account with the MoleScope app ( a link will be provided) to access your own images.
-
What is 'dermoscopy'?Dermoscopy is a non-invasive, in vivo technique primarily used for the examination of skin lesions. Dermoscopy is performed with a handheld instrument called a dermatoscope. The procedure allows for the visualization of skin structures in the layers of the skin; these structures are usually not visible to the naked eye.
-
What are your prices? You can see all our prices under the service menu. SKiNTUITION tries to offer competitive pricing so that everyone can look after their skin health.
-
What happens if you find something? If we detect any suspicious lesions that we feel require further investigation from your GP or a specialist, we are able to refer you for these. We have good knowledge of how to access specialist services if need be.
